The Issue

Generative AI music is a quickly evolving and new development in the music world and we are all catching up to understand, control, curate, and produce it.

It needs to be understood that generative AI is not 100% evil nor are the people that use it to make music. There is a spectrum of how it is used, one part of it is songs generated 100% by prompt, another is songs generated using human lyrics which brings lyric ownership and royalties into the mix, another is songs using human played instruments or human made beats combined with AI tools. As technology grows these situations become very gray and extremely difficult to label each song's actual construction.

Because of this and the current labeling systems, music cannot simply be labeled AI or not AI there is too much involved in each situation and thousands of artist will be disenfranchised from royalties and placement on platforms simply because of a black and white labeling systems that are being put into place. The communities of AI assisted artists are small, fragile, and new to the music business but over time they will become organized, they will be part of PROs, and representative groups, and they will be a force to be reckoned with.

We ask that the policies Spotify enacts do not just represent one side of the issue but the whole issue. AI assisted artists will gladly register what they used and how they used it but do not penalize them for it. Give Spotify users a way to simply choose to opt in or opt out of generative AI music. Give them a list of use cases where they can block 100% AI tracks but still be able to listen to hybrid tracks with human influence.

If you must lock away all generative AI tracks into a category unto itself then make it fair for the artist. treat it like electronica where we can all enjoy each other's music and not just shut it away where your platform never plays it.

There is much more than meets the eye about this issue but only seeing one perspective will be damaging to everyone involved.

Thank you for your time.
